Launched in 1942, serving from 1943 to 1991, New Jersey was the most decorated battleship in US naval history. One of 4 Iowa class battleships built by the US, like the others she boasted a 45,000 ton displacement, an amazing 212,000hp,& three turrets of 50 caliber 40.6cm (16")& triple guns, and despite her large size, with the hull measuring over 270m, was narrow enough to pass through the Panama Canal. Following service in major battles in the Pacific during WWII, she was deployed in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1982, upgrading with modern technology and weapon’s systems enabled the launch of Tomahawk cruise and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Whilst serving on missions in Central America, she was rushed to the Mediterranean in 1983 to provide fire support in Beirut, Lebanon. After service in the first Gulf War, final decommissioning took place in 1991.
