This style of compact, battery powered tail lamp was developed in the 1970s for Freightliner trains, where oil lamps, exposed on the end of a flat wagon, �were being blown out. Following successful testing these electric lamps�steadily replaced�the traditional oil lit type for all trains during the 1980s and are the stadard train tail lamps in use today.
