Manning, Wardle locomotives were popular with civil engineering contractors needing locomotives for sometimes extended temporary railways needed for large construction contracts. Where an engine was needed for ongoing shunting duties after completion of the contract these sturdy 0-6-0 saddle tanks were often purchased from the contractor and some served for many years in industrial service.
