The S-class submarines were designed before USA entered WW1 and were mass-produced like the "four stacker" destroyers, most completing after the war ended. Many went on to serve in WW2 and two of them were transferred to the Royal Navy in 1942 (S 1 & S 29). S 28 was lost in a diving accident in 1944 off Pearl Harbor but most survived WW2 and were scrapped from 1946.
