Panay was one of the Guam class of river gunboats (six ships in 3 different sizes) that were made in USA but assembled in China in 1928. When the Japanese occupied Nanking, the Chinese capital, she embarked the embassy staff and sailed up river, away from the front line. She was bombed and sunk the following day and three people were killed. Eventually, the Japanese paid compensation for the incident.
