Originally built as America in 1940 she was used as the troopship West point until 1946 when she was restored to the United States Line as a passenger ship. In the 1960s , she was bought by Chandris Lines and used on the Australia run until she became the cruise ship America (see Ri236e) in 1978. Later she was re-named Italis, Naga, Alderfoss and finally American Star before grounding off the Canary IslandsĀ  in 1994 under tow to Bankok to be used as a hotel ship. The bow was still visible until recently.
