The development of the B-17 was based on the US Army requirements in 1934 for a four-engined long-range heavy bomber capable of operating at high altitudes. The development finally culminated in the main version that was used from 1943, the B-17G with an additional gun turret under the chin and reinforcements to the defensive weapons. The total production was 8680 machines. The B-17 was nicknamed the "Flying Fortress" due to its great robustness and heavy defensive weaponry with up to 13 MGs.
