Mounted with the deep web of the I section vertical as a beam this section provides a very good load bearing capability, while the flanges top and bottom prevent lateral bending. Often described by the term 'rolled steel joist' or 'RSJ' I beams are commonly used for all horizontal load bearing structures such as window lintels, floor joists, roof supports, hoist runners and bridges. Deeper section beams provide for greater load carrying capacity and/or for longer bridge spans.
