The 10 Gazelle class were the first successful German Light Cruisers. Ariadne was sunk at Heligoland Bight and Frauenlob was sunk at Jutland but the rest had been reduced to second-line duties by 1916 and partially disarmed. Medusa and Arcona were re-activated as flak ships in WW2 (see Mercator Miniships) and scrapped in 1948. Amazone survived until 1954! Niobe served in the Med. in WW2 as the Yugoslav, "Dalmacija", the Italian, "Cattaro" and, finally, as "Niobe" under German control, she was torpedoed by MTBs 276 & 298 and sank just before Christmas 1943.
