HMS Kent was an old, slow, armoured cruiser but she chased Nurnburg all day after von Spee ordered his East Asiatic Squadron to scatter. Kent was one of the slowest of her class on trials but, with sparks leaping from her funnels and the wardroom furniture as fuel, she slowly overhaulled Nurnburg and overwhelmed her by superior weight of shell.
