The Germans referred to this class of ships as "Heavy Cruisers, Second Class" but with deck armour and no belt, the Royal Navy would have described them as "Protected Cruisers". The German Navy was always short of men and with no obvious role in the North Sea, these obsolescent warships were disarmed and used as Accommodation and School Ships after 1916. Number in class:5.
