The RMS Campania was rescued from the scrapyard after the outbreak of WW1 to provide a seaplane tender that could operate with the Grand Fleet. As a former Blue Riband holder, she was still capable of operating at the speed of the fleet in action in all weathers. She underwent a number of modifications and as seen here she could fly off seaplanes on dollies down the flight deck between the funnels without having to put the planes on the water to take off from there as the former Channel ferries had to do. Her big chance came for the Battle of Jutland but she missed the signal to raise steam and was left behind when the Grand Fleet sailed. She was sunk by HMS Glorious in a storm when ships dragged their anchors in the Firth of Forth later in the war.
