Navis Neptun 1/1250 74N U9, the German submarine that sank HMSs Aboukir, Cressy & Hogue in 1914
Constructed before WW1, this U-boat was on patrol in the Broad Forties off the Dutch coast when she encountered three patrolling armoured cruisers of the Bacchante class. One by one she torpedoed these large warships and they all sank with large loss of life. A most impressive demonstration of the effectiveness of submarines in naval war.
U9 was considered obsolete in 1915 and was converted to an above water torpedo boat and a training ship, surviving WW1. There were 4 boats in the class, U9-12. U10 & 11 were lost to mines and U12 was rammed & sunk by HMS Ariel.
