Navis Neptun 1/1250 51N SMS Dresden, German WW1 Light Cruiser (1909)
A 1/1250 scale waterline metal model of SMS Dresden, the first German light cruiser fitted with steam turbines, by Navis 51N in overall grey. All ships in the German East Asiatic Squadron were repainted from tropical white and buff into grey by early 1914 following instructions from their Admiralty.
Dresden was the sister-ship of SMS Emden but Emden had been fitted with reciprocating machinery and Dresden with turbines Dresden proved faster than Emden but the turbines were not as economical on coal at cruising speed. When operating as part of von Spee's East Asiatic Squadron, Dresden had the speed to escape from the Battle of the Falklands but starved of coal, she was eventually tracked down among the islands at the southern tip of South America some months later.
