Navis Neptun 1/1250 4N SMS Oldenberg, a Dreadnought Battleship, 1912
A 1/1250 scale metal model of the German dreadnought battleship, Oldenburg. This class of ship was the first to mount 12" guns and all four ships of the class were present at the Battle of Jutland. By the end of the war, they were no longer considerred front line ships by the Allies and they were not interred in Scapa Flow but after the scuttling of the best ships, they were handed over to the Allies. Osfriesland was sunk by the Americans in aerial bombing tests and the others were scrapped.
The 4 ships of the "Helgoland" Class were a significant improvement on the first German Dreadnought (Nassau) but retained the wing turrets which limited the broadside to 8, 12" of the 12 carried. "Ostfriesland" was the only member of the class to be damaged and after the war was ceded to the USA and sunk in Billy Mitchell's aircraft bombing trials. "Thueringen" was the last to be broken up, having been retained for training purposes until 1923.
