The SS United States was fitted with high pressure steam turbines of the type produced for large US warships and these made her considerably faster than the large Cunarders and she easily took the Blue Riband from RMS Queen Mary. She was never as popular as the more opulent Queen Mary and within 10 years her speed advantage became irrelevant when jet aircraft arrived on the transatlantic route. The SS United States still exists but she is not a preserved ship open to the public.
