Dilwara and sister-ship Dunera were designed as purpose-built troopships just before the outbreak of WW2. They were operated by British India Line and painted in the standard peacetime colours of white with blue hull line. This pair of ships served throughout WW2 and afterwards. From 1942 onwards, they were in grey overall.

Coastlines has produced a finished version of Dilwaraas the ship was in November 1940 when she was photographed in the Suez Canal on a voyage to deliver troops of the Australian 7th Division to El Kantara. Unusually, Dilwara had two shielded deck guns side by side at the stern, see photograph.
