This self-propelled gun, mounting a 7.5 cm casemate cannon, was built on the chassis of the famous Pz.Kpfw. IV tank. Combat in urban areas was associated with an ever-more urgent need for artillery equipment that could be used to provide close infantry support. In such situations, German commanders often valued self-propelled guns more than actual tanks. The Mark IV assault guns were produced in several versions right up to the end of the war.
