During the Vietnam War (1965–1975), U.S. military airfields became key combat and logistical hubs, essential for the survival of ground forces, providing air support, delivering vital supplies, and maintaining air superiority. One example was Binh Thuy Air Base, an important military airfield located in the Mekong Delta that played a key role in controlling southern Vietnam. It hosted various units of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Army, including the U.S. Navy’s VAL-4 “Black Ponies” light attack squadron, which was stationed there from March 1969 until its disestablishment in April 1972. The squadron operated OV-10 Bronco attack aircraft, conducting aerial patrols and providing fire support for ground units in the Mekong Delta. It was unique within the U.S. Navy, being the Navy’s only shore-based light attack aviation unit, specially established for operations in riverine and swampy areas. The air base also housed evacuation and surgical hospitals, where wounded personnel were transported daily for emergency surgery. Medical evacuation was carried out by specialised medical companies equipped with UH-1H medical helicopters.
