When General Montgomery was commander of the 8th British Army in North Africa, he was given a specially designed staff vehicle. This original vehicle was based on the standard British army vehicle Leyland Retriever. A non-standard structure was installed on the basic chassis, which was a mobile field office, the interior of which was divided into two rooms. The front small room was equipped with a bathroom, while the large room had wardrobes for things and clothes, a desk with table lamps and a large sofa. Montgomery had two more special trucks at his disposal, one of which was converted into a mobile sleeping room and the other was used for large staff maps and for meetings. All three vehicles are also known as ‘Monty's Caravan’. They were used by General (and from 1944 Field Marshal) Montgomery until the very end of the war.
