The history of the Unimog S 404 military truck began in the post-war period, when the Bundeswehr required a light, versatile vehicle capable of operating in difficult off-road conditions. The resulting Unimog S 404 was compact, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase and a payload of 1.5 tonnes. Its 2,195 cc six-cylinder petrol engine produced 82 hp. A robust frame, four-wheel drive, and effective suspension gave the vehicle excellent cross-country capability. Over the following decades, the Unimog S 404 was produced in numerous versions, including cargo trucks, Koffer-bodied vehicles, ambulances, mobile radio stations, workshops, and snowploughs. Some vehicles were armed with an MG3 machine gun mounted on a special rotating ring mount known as the Drehringlafette. Its tubular structure was installed above the cab on support brackets attached to both sides of the vehicle. The system allowed the gunner to engage targets through a full 360-degree arc. Equipped in this way, the Unimog S 404 could serve as a mobile machine-gun platform and engage low-flying aerial targets.
