USNS Comet was the sole member of the class of cargo transports. Initially designated T-AK 269, she was re-classified T-LSV 7 in 1963 and later still, AKR-7 and laid up in the Reserve as SS Comet. She was re-activated in 2003 to deliver Marine Engineers and Marines to Kuwait for the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, she was withdrawn once more and slated for scrapping in 2014.
