Completed at Swindon in September 1954 records appear to disagree on 82020s' first shed, with either Exmouth Junction or Hull Botanic Gardens being noted. Agreement is reached on Nuneaton shed from October 1954 where the loco worked until moving to Wrexham Rhosddu shed in November 1956, moving to Shrewsbury in January 1960 and Machynlleth on the Cambrian line to Cardigan Bay coast in March that year.
82020 moved to the Southern region allocation in May 1965, working from Nine Elms shed until withdrawn from service in September.
