The role of a test driver is essential to the team, much of the work happens, unseen back at the constructors factories and test facilities where the cars are being developed in readiness for the main team drivers the following season. The test drivers also attend the Grand Prix meets across the world in reserve for any situations where they might have to step in and feature in the race.

Gary Paffett is a British racing driver, born on the 24th March 1980 in Bromley, Kent. Paffett started racing in the 1990s in the British Cadet Championships and in his first season he earned himself a respectable third place. He then went on to take part in various other forms of motor racing and won a series of Championships including British Formula 3 National Class, the German Formula 3 Championship and the 2005 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). Gary Paffett joined Formula 1™ in 2005 as a full time test driver for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and has remained with the team since.
