Powered by an American built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine the Mustang proved extremely successful in service during World War 2. Over 900 Mustang III and nearly 900 Mustang IV's served with the RAF. In February 1944 No.19 Squadron took delivery of its first Mustangs, which provided close support for the army from D-Day onwards. In September the squadron returned to East Anglia, then Scotland, being re-equipped with Mustang IVs to undertake long-range escort assignments, operating from several bases until the end of the war. On September 7 1945 the squadron moved to Molesworth, at which time one of the pilots was Flt. Lt. Dooley who named his aircraft 'Dooleybird'. The Mustangs being lend-lease aircraft they were returned to the USA after the war and the squadron reverted to Spitfires in March 1946.
