Sandy Hook Lighthouse was built by the British and is probably the oldest to have survived the War of Independece. It was known for years as New York Lighthouse but, as more lighthouses were built on the approaches to the harbour, it was given a name defining its location more precisely. It has been modelled to represent its appearance in the 21st Century along with the large keepers' house which are the only two buildings that can be seen from the seaward side above the trees at the back of the sandy beach.
