Coastlines 1/1250 CL-L36 Point Bolivar Lighthouse, Texas, C20th diorama
Point Bolivar Lighthouse is a 1/1250 scale diorama of the lighthouse on the eastern coast of Texas marking the entrance to the inlet leading up to Houston. The model represents the lighthouse and keepers house and the low-lying coast between the tower and the inlet in a foreshortened form to provida a back-drop for 20th Century ship models.
This diorama model is by Coastlines Models, CL-L36
Point Bolivar lighthouse is a brick-lined, cast iron tower built on the marshy ground to the east of Point Bolivar, one side of the inlet leading to Houston. The other side of the inlet is Galveston Island where USS Texas, the only surviving WW1 Dreadnought battleship is currently undergoing a major refit.
The lighthouse was discontinued in the 1930s and replaced by a range light just off the point itself. The site was sold off to a private owner and from the 1950s the Coastguard service stopped painting the lighthouse in the black and white stripes. The keepers house has been re-built and a similar house has been built to the west of the tower which has rusted to a uniform dark brown overall. Coastlines has modelled the scene today in model number CL-L36A (also available from Antics). Also modelled is Texas Highway 87 which passes in front of the lighthouse to the ferry terminal where a foot passenger and Ro-Ro ferry goes to Galveston Island.
