Bengtskar Lighthouse is the largest lighthouse in the Baltic and is located on an off-shore island at the mouth of the Gulf of Finland which was jointly owned by Sweden and Finland. During WW2, the Soviet Union tried to re-exert control over Finland and sent troops to occupy the island and occupy it toprevent the Finnish lighthouse keepers reporting shipping movements. Since the lighthouse had been built in the Swedish part of the lighthouse and Sweden was neutral in WW2 an international incident was only avoided by the Finns sending a fleet of gunboats to bombard the invaders and they surrendered to the Finns in the lighthouse building.
