Coastlines 1/1250 CL-L14a Rockall, the isolated rock in the North Atlantic before 1955
A 1/1250 scale model of the isolated rock in the Noth Atlantic before 1972. The rock was used as a navigation point for RAF planes patrolling the North Atlantic in WW2 and in 1972 the first lighthouse was fitted by removing the top of the rock to make a platform and installing a gas powered lantern (see CL-L14).
The top of the rock is only a little over 60ft above mean high water and this means that the rock is ofter overtopped by waves during heavy weather. A model of the first Cunarder, RMS Britannia is shown in the photograph to show the small size of the rock, even at low water.
