In the 1930s HM Government decided that the contract speed for ships on the mail service to South Africa should be increased and Stirling Castle and her slightly larger sister, Cape Town Castle, were the answer. Being capable to speeds in excess of 20 knots, the pair of large motor ships could easily manage the 18kt average required. CM has modelled both ships and they were the fastest pair of ships ever on the South African mail service.
