As common carriers the railway companies were responsible for the movement of explosives and explosive materials, grouped under the heading of 'gunpowder' to military establishments, mines and quarries and special vans were built to carry it safely. These Gunpowder Vans were run in ordinary goods trains, though rules required them to be placed within the train such that they were kept away from the locomotive and wagons containing potentially flammable goods (eg. oil tank wagons) and preferably where they could safely be observed by the guard so unauthorised tampering would not go unnoticed.
Gunpowder vans were built on the short underframe with low-height all metal bodies which were lined internally with wood to prevent sparks. The doors would be padlocked, with the key being passed by the train guard to the responsible stationmaster on arrival. Only authorised staff would be permitted to open the doors and special over-boots were stored inside to prevent sparks being created by nails in the porters or workmens boots.
