In 1956, the eastbound Stockholm ran head on into the westbound Italian liner, Andrea Doria in fog off the coast of America. The ice-strengthened bow of the Stockholm inflicted fatal damage on the Italian ship but Stockholm survived and returned to America for repairs to her bow. As an intermediate transatlantic liner, Stockholm was re-fitted with additional accommodation built over the cargo hatches to become a full-time cruise ship and she still continues today, as possibly the oldest ocean cruise ship still in service.
