Albatros 1/1250 Alk86A HMS Antelope Royal Navy Type 21 Frigate 1982
Antelope was a Type 21 frigate of the Royal Navy and this has been modelled in 1/1250 scale, waterline form by Albatros SM in Germany, Alk86A. This particular model has been re-made and re-painted to represent the ship as she was during the Falklands Campaign in 1982 (see photograph).
Antelope was one of the three members of the class which had not been re-fitted twith Exocet missile launchers, the others were Ambuscade and Amazon. Amazon was being re-fitted and was not sent to the Falklands, Ambuscade was fitted for Exocets after she returned from the South Atlantic.
Antelope was hit by a missile and at least one bomb in St Carlos Water, caught fire and burned out and was sunk the next day.
The eight ships of the "Amazon" class were an attempt to allow shipbuilders to try a "design & build" project. The handsome result did not save taxpayers money and the aluminium superstructures were vulnerable to fire (Antelope & Ardent were sunk in the Falklands Campaign). The six survivors were sold to Pakistan with Amazon becoming Babur, Ambuscade becoming Tarik in 1993, and theĀ others, Arrow, Active, Alacrity and Avenger becoming Raast, Shah Jahan, Badr, Tippu Sultan, & Kaibar in 1994.
