In the serious business of saving lives at sea, the brave volunteer crews of Britain's RNLI service need access to the most capable craft to safely effect rescues in some of the most challenging conditions.
The RNLI are recognised global leaders in the design, construction and safe operation of lifeboats, the vast majority of them manned by volunteer crews. The Shannon Class All-Weather Lifeboat, designed entirely in-house by the RNLI equips them with a cutting-edge rescue vessel. Driven by water-jets mounted within the hull which provide it with both speed and incredible maneuverability the 18-tonne 13.6 metre long Shannon was designed for beach launch and recovery, along with a specially designed mobile hydraulic slipway. The powered slipway system allows for beach launch and recovery using the best possible position for weather conditions and state of tide, with a turn-round and re-launch within 10 minutes if needed.
A highly capable and versatile vessel 50 Shannon class ALBs are in service around Great Britain and Ireland, continuing their proud lifesaving tradition spanning 200 years.
