At the age of twenty-four Virgil is the most level-headed of the Tracy brothers. Born on 15 August he was named after one of the Mercury Seven astronauts, Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom, from NASA's Project Mercury space program. After graduating from the Denver School of Advanced Technology, he quickly proved himself the ideal choice to pilot Thunderbird 2 and operate its complex rescue equipment, such as the elevator cars seen in the very first episode of Thunderbirds ‘Trapped in the Sky’ and the more commonly used Mole and Firefly. He shares his mother’s looks and calm temperament, which gives him a quiet closeness to his father, Jeff Tracy — though no special treatment exists within the family. Virgil is direct and clear-spoken and calm under pressure, forming quick, reliable judgments. His straightforward approach earns respect both within International Rescue and outside it. Away from rescue missions, Virgil is a talented artist, an accomplished pianist and a lover of classical music. He is often the target of good-natured teasing from his brothers, but always with affection. Like his brother Scott, Virgil appeared in every Thunderbirds tv episode – thirty-two in all – and in two feature-length films Thunderbirds are Go and Thunderbird 6. Virgil’s character was voiced by American actor David Holliday for the first twenty-six episodes, before English actor (and Gerry Anderson regular) Jeremy Wilkin took over for the remaining six episodes and the two movies.
