Though known as an American fighter, the Mustang was designed for the British in 1940. It was also the British who gave the plane the Mustang name. The prototype was completed within a 120-day time The P51-B went into service in December, 1943, serving as fighter of choice in England and Italy until March, 1944, when the P-51D (with the bubble canopy) began to appear. Even so, the P-51B remained in service until the end of WWII and accounted for nearly a third of all combat hours.
