Designed to incorporate the maximum weight possible through the use of diecasting wherever possible the Bachmann 9F is able to provide realistic performance to match the top quality detailing. Driven by a smooth running skew wound locomotive mounted motor the use of dozens of detail parts has allowed specific locomotives to be accurately portrayed. Era 5.
British Railways appointed R A Riddles as it's chief engineer and tasked him with the provision of standard locomotives suitable for work across the network. Developed from his many years of experience with steam locomotives under service conditions the 9F class heavy freight 2-10-0 locomotives were among the largest locomotives ever to run on BR, and certainly the most successful heavy freight locomotives. The class was able to haul the heaviest goods trains and proved equally able to handle fast passenger trains up to 80mph!
The type is possibly best remembered for their work on the demanding Somerset and Dorset route from Bath to Bournemouth, where the 9Fs revolutionised operation, finally elmininating the need for double heading.
