VW updated the iconic Golf GTI throughout its life as competitors such as Opel and Peugeot began to catch up with their own hot hatches. In 1980 they introduced a new 5-speed manual gearbox improving both comfort on the motorway and fuel efficiency. In 1982 a larger 1780cc engine was introduced adapted from the existing 1588cc engine to create the ultimate Golf GTI Mk1.
