The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic twin engine all-weather night fighter and attack aircraft. The F/A-18s first flew in November 1978 and the first production flight on April 12, 1980. The first 380 aircraft were F/A-18As and in September 1987 production switched to the F/A-18C. Variants A and C are single-seat aircraft while B and D are tandem-seats. The Hornet can operate from either aircraft carriers or land bases with the capability of in flight refueling. A total of 1,480 A-D variants were built.

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C 164682 c/n 1115/C296 flew with VFA-113 in 2004 and 2005 assigned to the USS John C. Stennis, named after a U.S. Senator who served for 41 years. VFA-113 was established on July 15, 1948 as VF-113 Stingers, redesignated VA-113 in 1965 and VFA-113 in March 1983 when they became equipped with the F/A-18A. VFA-113 flew the F/A-18A until 1992 when they received the F/A-18C. The Stingers have participated in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom, Iraq War and Operation Inherent Resolve.
