The lighthouse was built from coloured stones on the original pier at the northern shore at the mouth of the River Wear. When the outer breakwater was built in 1902, the lighthouse was dismantled and re-built on the end of the northern arm of the new breakwater.
In model terms, the breakwater is very similar to the size to the Triang model which is readily available, new or secondhand.
