The Smalls lighthouse is the most isolated of Trinity House rock lighthouses. It was one of the first to have keepers relieved by helicopter but at first the landing pad was on the reef itself. Later a helipad was added above the tower and the light was automated but the tower retained its red and white candy stripes until the 21st century when the paint was stripped from the granite tower.
