Achilles was a follow on to the Warrior and was one of the very best of the broadside ironclads designed to overcome the weaknesses in the Warrior-class ships. With stun sails, she carried 44000 square feet of canvas, the largest ever fitted to a British warship. When her seagoing service ended she was used in various roles: as a base ship Hibernia in 1902, Egmont on 1904, Egremont in 1918 and Pembroke in 1919 and she was sold for breaking in 1925.
