Southern Wagon Kits

200 of these insulated and steam heated banana vans were built in 1935 to convey loads from Southampton docks to destinations across Britain, so were not confined to the Southern. The vans lasted into the 1960s and transfers for SR and BR liveries are supplied with the kit.
Parkside kits are well designed and easy to build into detailed and good running models.
The chassis is designed with sliding axleboxes, this allows for any distortion created during building to be corrected by the builders' preferred method, be that compensation, allowing the wheels to simply follow the rails under their own weight, or fixing the axleboxes in place once the wagon is set with all four wheels on the rail. Metal wheels and sprung buffers are supplied, along with hand and vacuum brake system details appropriate for the wagon.
These insulated box vans were built for banana traffic but were also used for other traffic when required, including as meat vans and as general traffic box vans.

Model kit of the Southern Railway 8-plank open merchandise and minerals wagon.
8 plank general merchandise wagons were favoured by the SECR and LSWR before grouping and the Southern continued the trend of using these higher cubic capacity wagons. This kit is based on the diagram 1379 wagons, with 3,000 built between 1926 and 1928, with most still in service at Nationalisation and lasting into the early 1960s. Transfers for SR and BR liveries included.

This kit builds a model of the batch of 75 insulated vans built by the Southern Railway in 1931 under diagram 1477. These vans were insulated only, built using the body design of the small batch of refrigerated vans built in 1928, but without the ice bunkers and associated roof hatches.
Insulated vans might be used for chilled meat (mostly imported) and banana traffic, when the fruit did not need to be ripened enroute. The carrying capacity was increased to 11 tons in the early 1940's. Examples lasted in traffic until the mid-1960s.

These 6 wheeled 20 ton brake vans were built from the late 1890s as the weight of goods trains increased, needing a heavier brake van for the guard to control them. The Southern retained these brake vans in service with many lasting through WW2 before withdraw commenced with the post-war reduction of goods traffic. Many entered British Railways service at nationalisation, being withdrawn in BR livery through the 1950s.

A well designed model kit of the Southern Railway brake van with its distinctive short central cabin. Construction of this type of van began in 1929 with a number of variants being produced including batches for the War Department during WW2. After Nationalisation the Southern vans migrated to many other parts of the country with examples turning up in the North East. Most were withdrawn through the 1960s as freight train operations moved towards bulk trainload services reducing the numbers of trains and brake vans needed. The last examples were withdrawn from engineering service in the early to mid 1980s, with many going to heritage railways. Kit supplied with SR and BR transfers.

A plastic kit to build a detailed model of the Southern Railway standard design cattle wagon.
The Southern built 299 of these diagram 1529 cattle vans between 1930 and 1939, with many lasting until near the end of livestock haulage on BR in the 1960s. Transfers for SR and BR liveries supplied.

Detailed plastic model kit building a model of the Southern Railway standard ventilated box van with its' distinctive elliptical profile 'Lines' roof.
This kit represents one of the 450 vans built by the Southern from 1929 to 1931 with even planked sides. The distinctive roof profile of the Southern vans makes them easy to pick out in photographs, with many still in service in the 1960s and then finding uses as departmental stores vans.
