Designed for escort and air superiority duties the Bf-110 Zerstorer Destroyers performed very effectively early in WWII. But in the Battle of Britain the much faster and agile Hurricanes and Spitfires inflicted tremendous losses on the Bf-110s, leading to their withdrawal and a change of calling to night fighting that in turn caused mayhem to un-escorted British bombers.
In January 1942 II./NJG1 transferred to Belgium at a time when the RAF was re-evaluating the success of operations against Germany. Bad weather for the first few months of the year meant the need for night fighters was at a low and in February 1942 scoreless II./NJG1 moved to Koksijde take part in Operation Cerberus, the breakout from Brest of the battlecruisers Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and heavy cruiser Prince Eugen, to return to home waters in Germany.
