In addition to basic mineral loads like coal, aggregates and ore open wagons were used to convey almost all types of cargo before WW1 and even until the 1950s many bulky or crated loads would be loaded by crane into open wagons, then covered with a tarpaulin sheet. Only the introduction of the fork-lift truck has allowed heavy items to be loaded easily into a box van, where access by crane would be near-impossible.
