Ruston 48DS Shunters

Ideal for micro-layouts! Expected Autumn 2024.
Developed from Ruston Hornsby's line of narrow gauge diesel locomotives the standard gauge 48bhp 48DS (diesel shunter) was sold as an alternative to a small steam locomotive or horse traction suitable for industry users needing to move wagons around their site. The diesel offered several economies, it needed no crew and used no fuel when not in use, while lacking a boiler needed no onerous pressure vessel maintenance. The small diesel quickly became popular for light duty shunting requirements and especially where food (eg milk and beans), flammable goods were being handled (eg petro-chemicals and paper mills) or covered loading sheds were provided. In addition to preserved examples a small number of 48DSs have seen use on construction contracts in recent years.

Ruston & Hornsby started constructing internal combustion engine locomotives in 1896, introducing a range of narrow gauge types in the early 1930s. The most powerful of this range with a 48bhp engine was also built as a standard gauge shunting locomotive, the Ruston 48DS. Offered as an economical alternative to small steam locomotives the 48DS quickly became popular with owners of private sidings where only intermittent shunting was needed.

Designed from scratch using original research and drawings provided by Ruston 48DS owners and experts Heljan are now bringing an O gauge model of this tiny locomotive. A superb new entry-level model iand a ‘must have’ for modellers of the industrial scene and preservation sites, where many of the survivors now reside.
Shorter than a wagon the 48DS is ideal for the smallest of layouts such as 'shunting planks', making the most of restricted length headshunts on shunting puzzle layouts and will be right at home on the Peco Setrack points!
