Ideal for shunting small goods yards. The LSWR B4 class were built for shunting in the confined locations and over the sharply curved track laid around docks and wharfs. Although associated with the Southampton docks allocations included Plymouth (Cattedown Wharfs), Exmouth Junction and Bournemouth. After larger engines arrived for Southampton docks the B4 engines were often to be found shunting the cramped goods yard at Winchester, Poole Quay at Hamworthy and as pilot engines at locomotive shed and works. One was sold to Corrall Ltd for use at their Southampton coal depot.
