The 88bhp Ruston 88DS is the 'big brother' to the 48DS, designed to be powerful enough to replace a small steam shunting locomotive.
Ruston 421415 was built new for the North British Distillery Co. Ltd, being delivered in March 1958 to their distillery in the Gorgie district of Edinburgh, around the period when the distillery was expanding to include the former Edinburgh Corporation Tramways depot. In 1973, the locomotive was donated to the fledgling Fife Railway Preservation Group, who located it at the Lochty Private Railway until 1994. 421415 has now been restored and wears the livery of the North British Railway.

The 88bhp Ruston 88DS is the 'big brother' to the 48DS, designed to be powerful enough to replace a small steam shunting locomotive.
Ruston 441934 was built new for chocolate and confectionery manufacturers Rowntree & Co. Ltd of York, delivered in April 1960 and joining fellow Ruston 88DS locomotives 421419/1958 and 432479/1959 as No. 3. In 1979 a new 0-6-0 locomotive was bought for the York factory and No.3 was transferred to Rowntree’s Fawdon, Newcastle factory until rail service there ended in 1987. No. 3 was passed to the North York Moors Railway for preservation, but in 2013 was quite fittingly acquired by two members of the Derwent Valley Light Railway and has returned to York, being named Ken Cooke in honour of a former Rowntree’s employee, a D-Day veteran and holder of the Legion d’Honneur.

In 2007 newly formed Colas Rail unveiled four newly liveried Class 47 locomotives, having previously relied on hired Class 57s to fulfil its timber hauling contracts. This was early evidence of the ambition Colas Rail had to obtain and grow its own fleet of freight locomotives. The first two locomotives to be overhauled ready for service were No. 47727 ‘Rebecca’ and No. 47749 ‘Demelza’. In April 2016 locomotive No. 47749 had its original name 'City of Truro' restored.

While the Class 66s began their service in 1998, No. 66004s unique livery and service reflect a modern preoccupation with promoting environmental awareness. The HS2 owned locomotive is part of an active drive to promote the environmental benefits of delivering construction materials by rail instead of road, which inspired the name 'The Green Progressor'. The intention is that for every locomotive HS2 uses to transport aggregates and construction materials, up to 76 lorries are removed from the UK's roads and motorway network. 'The Green Progressor' is both innovative and a benefit of tradition; in returning focus to our beloved railways we boost efficiency and reduce emissions.

56060 'The Cardiff Rod Mill' entered service in June 1979, then un-named as the 60th member of the 135 strong class to be built. It was not one of the first 30 to be built, those built in Romania and therefore the locomotive was able to enter service without the need for a rebuild.

All of the class would be in service with BR, until privatisation when all of the class would enter the ownership of EWS. Following EWS service, the locomotives would pass to various private owners. 56060 is currently owned by GBRf, awaiting conversion into the rebuilt Class 69.

Model of BR locomotive 47803 finished in BR infrastructure livery.
During the mid-s980s British Rail allocated locomotives to business sectors and 47803 was assigned to the infrastructure sector, serving the engineering departments and at that time installing new high speed high capacity communications networks along Britains major rail routes. The capacity of these networks could then be sold to commercial telecommunications service providers.
Being primarily for engineering service 47803 was painted in the high-visibility engineering yellow livery.

Introduced to service as D212 in May 1959 and the third of the production series to be delivered, 'Aureol' was officially named in 1960. By 1974 when the locomotive was re-numbered 40012 under TOPS the locomotive's nameplates had been removed, yet despite this the locomotive's name was painted onto the bodyside before 1985 withdrawal. Reinstated in 1985 to assist with the remodeling of Crewe Station, restricted to a top speed of 35mph, and given the departmental number 97407.
This extension to the service life of number 40012 resulted in the locomotive being purchased for preservation.

British Railways originally ordered ten Class 40s, then known as "English Electric Type 4s", as evaluation prototypes. They were to be used as replacements for steam locomotives, usually hauling passenger services. The prototypes were successful enough to warrant a further 190 production models. It was initially worried that the locomotives lacked the power needed to maintain the speeds required on express services and as a result the capability to run in multiple was considered a main design feature. This resulted in the inclusion of small gangways at each end of the first 145 units. After this point it was realised that multiple running was rare and could be achieved without the gangways. The first 125 units were built with a disk route identification. When unfolded the disks were white with a small hole to allow a light to shine through during the night. When the top half of the disk was folded down the back was painted so as to blend into the locomotive and make it clear the disk was not in use. A few locomotives forwent the disks and simply relied on lights or the more traditional lamps, lamp irons having remained a feature. The disk system was soon abandoned in favour of the more modern headcode system, initially requiring split headcodes to accommodate the gangway doors. Once the gangway doors were abandoned the split headcode boxes were combined in a central position where the gangway doors had previously been. The arrival of more powerful locomotives such as the class 47, 50 and 55 along with the electrification of the WCML made the Class 40s redundant, relegating them to freight duties for which they were not well suited. Withdrawals began in 1976 with the majority of locomotives being withdrawn in the early 1980s. Locomotive D232 was built in 1959 and entered service in September that year. The locomotive was named 'Empress of Canada' in March 1961, named after the vessel operated by Canadian Pacific Steamships. Under the TOPS numbering system, the locomotive became 40032 in late 1973. The locomotive was withdrawn in February 1982 and scrapped at Swindon Locomotive Works.

British Rail Class 31 diesel locomotives, also known as the Brush Type 2 and originally as Class 30, were built by Brush Traction from 1957-62. They were numbered in two series, D5500-D5699 and D5800-D5862. Construction of the first locomotive was completed in the final week of September 1957, and the handing-over took place on 31 October. The first Class 31 entered service in November 1957, after the launch of the Class 20 locomotive and was one of the Pilot Scheme locomotives ordered by British Railways to replace steam traction. The Railway Technical Centre (RTC) in London Road, Derby, England, was the technical headquarters of the British Railways Board, and was built in the early 1960s. British Rail described it as the largest railway research complex in the world, and certain Class 31s served in a capacity as locomotives aiding experiements and research.

In 1971 London Transport acquired three Sentinel 0-6-0 shunters from an iron ore mine to repalce the ex-GWR 57xx pannier tanks used for depot shunting duties. To increase the wheelbase and ensure track circuits detected the small diesels each was coupled to a 'tender', a bogie removed from an old district line stock car. In 1993 the Sentinels were withdrawn and DL81 was sold for preservation at the Rocks by Rail museum at Cottesmore, Rutland.

The Hornby 0-6-0 Sentinel is a recently tooled model and a perfect addition to any small or industrial layout. The model is 6 pin DCC ready allowing for digital operation. The London Transport model features some enhanced detailing such as dumb buffers, NEM pocket covering plates and a prototypical trip cock by the wheelset.

Sentinel 10255, its works number, left the production line on the 25th May 1966, being delivered into NCB ownership shortly after at their Baddesley Colliery in the South Midlands. Curiously, and unlike most other NCB examples the locomotive would not receive a running number, and would be known either by a name or its works number for most of its life. In the modern era the locomotive has changed hands a few times, being owned by Potter Logistics as their striking yellow 'Pride of the Fens' and Ed Murray and Sons.

D444 as it was originally known was introduced into service in 1968 and allocated to the Stoke Division, being renumbered 50044 under the TOPS classification system in 1973. In 1974 50044 was relocated to the Bristol Bath Road Shed where it would remain for the remainder of its life. In a nice mathematic and literary coincidence, exactly 50 of the Class 50 locomotives were built and all of them named, 'Exeter' receiving its name in 1978.

The British Rail Class 47 or Brush Type 4 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Brush's Falcon Works in Loughborough and at British Railways' Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive. They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) – though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability – and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 55 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. As of January 2020, 78 locomotives still exist as Class 47s, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 32 Class 47s have been preserved, and 34 retain "operational status" on the mainline.

The Class 59 is a Co-Co diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel in La Grange, Illinois for British customers. A tender for six locomotives was created by Foster Yeoman, operator of Torr Works, for a powerful locomotive with 95% availability. Although Brush Traction and BREL of Britain were invited to come up with a design, only EMD could be the 95% availability criteria. EMD’s tender was sufficiently adept at the work required that double heading would no longer be needed, resulting in the order being reduced to just 4.

The locomotives were delivered to the UK via Southampton in January 1986 becoming the first privately owned locomotives to regularly operate on Britain’s mainline and the first designed and built in the US. After the initial 4 locomotives were proven successful, the Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation (ARC) ordered another 4 which were built by General Motors Diesel Division at their Canadian plant in London, Ontario in 1990. A final order of six locomotives was placed by National Power which were again built in Ontario in 1994 and 1995. The hugely successful EMD Class 66 is partially a development of the Class 59 and shares many components including its bodywork. Locomotive No. 59101 was one of the 4 ARC locomotives to be built in Canada. The locomotive arrived in Britain in October 1990 and entered service the following month. By the time the locomotive had arrived ARC had been purchased by Hanson PLC and as a result over the next few years all four of the ARC order locomotives were repainted into the blue and white Hanson livery.

The 'Lumo' service commenced on the 25th October 2021 with two trains per day travelling from London to Edinburgh in each direction on normal weekdays, however it is scheduled to be increased to five per day during 2022. It is anticipated that the fastest service will complete the journey in 4 hours 3 minutes, although most will take a little over 4 hours 30 minutes.

Carrying D5557 as its first number, the locomotive was initially allocated to the Ipswich Engine Shed before moving to a great many others across the country. Given the number 31139 under TOPS, upgraded to Class 31/4 specification in 1984, re-numbered again to 31438. The storied locomotive's final reallocation to Crewe occurred in 1988, with another re-numbering to 31538 in 1993 following modifications, with the locomotive remaining in BR service until 1995. The locomotive was chosen for preservation and is currently located at the Epping Ongar Railway numbered 31438.

The locomotive is one of a very small number of shunters to never receive a TOPS number, being absorbed by BR as departmental stock in July 1974.

In departmental use it was renumbered to 966509 and it would wear this number until Jun 1979 when it left the departmental pool. The locomotive would be cut up in 1980 by BR at Thornaby, all traces of the locomotive were gone by the end of May.
