The real Class 69 Diesel Locomotives have been created for GBRf through the conversion of redundant Class 56s and we are delighted to present this Bachmann Branchline OO scale model of Britain’s newest mainline diesel.
Produced under an exclusive agreement with GBRf, the Branchline model has been painstakingly developed hand-in-hand with the introduction of the GBRf fleet. With the Class 69s being built from donor locomotives that were first built by three different works and have themselves seen almost fifty years of use and modification, Bachmann has worked closely with GBRf to accommodate any detail differences that were present on the donors and have remained apparent on the rebuilt machines, along with any changes made to the final design of the Class 69 during the ongoing build programme.
This diligent approach has resulted in a truly magnificent model which befits the Branchline name, capturing the Class 56 shape to a tee alongside the modern adornments and many changes made to the locomotives to create the 69s.
The bodyshell features crisp, accurate mouldings to depict the main features along with separately fitted parts, including etched bodyside and roof fan grilles, metal windscreen wipers and separately fitted driver’s door handrails. Inside the cab there is interior detailing which will be decorated appropriately whilst machine room detailing is visible through the bodyside grilles. The underframe equipment is all present and correct, composed of many separate parts along with sandboxes and sandpipes and sprung metal buffers, but it is the bogies that really bring this model to life. It’s hard to describe these as anything but a work of art, using countless separate components to model every aspect of the bogie in full relief, from the brakes to the suspension, even down to the separately fitted bogie-body securing chains.
All of this detail, both inside and out, will be brought to life with an exquisite livery application using true-to-prototype colours, fonts and logos and with the help of GBRf official livery diagrams.
Under the body, the Branchline Class 69 features our proven drive system using a 5 pole motor with twin flywheels driving all axles on each bogie. Electrical pick-up comes from all wheels whilst DCC provision comes in the form of a Plux22 interface. Directional lighting is of course provided, along with cab and machine room lighting when used on DCC. The Dual Fitted speaker system is fitted to every model and this is fully utilised in our SOUND FITTED variants.

Following in the footsteps of their N scale counterparts from Graham Farish, these new OO scale models have all the hallmarks of the Branchline Class 37 & 47 locomotives and more.

Depicting a Refurbished Class 31/1, this locomotive has had its Mirrlees engine replaced with an English Electric 12SVT and the Branchline model faithfully recreates this, with the correct roof exhaust ports and 12SVT engine block detail visible through the bodyside windows.

The LMS ‘Twins’ – Nos. 10000 and 10001 – were the very first mainline diesel locomotives built in the UK and now, this pioneering pair is available in N scale for the first time thanks to Graham Farish.

This model of No. 10000 depicts the first of the ‘Twins’ which entered service with the LMS just days before Nationalisation in December 1947, and so carries ‘LMS’ in large chrome letters on the bodyside – the locomotive would carry these during its early years of BR-ownership and was so adorned until 1951. In this original condition, No. 10000 operated on the Midland Region hauling trains both alone and as a pair with its twin, providing additional haulage power and range.

This model of No. 10001 depicts the second of the ‘Twins’, which entered service under BR ownership, having been completed little more than six months after Nationalisation. Unlike No. 10000, 10001 was outshopped without LMS or BR markings and instead its black and silver paintwork was adorned only with its number in large chrome numerals below each cab side. In this original condition, No. 10001 operated on the Midland Region hauling trains both alone and as a pair with its twin, providing additional haulage power and range.

This model of No. 10001 depicts the second of the ‘Twins’ during its final years in service and makes a perfect addition to any steam/diesel transition fleet. Carrying the eye-catching BR Green livery with Small Yellow Panels, No. 10001 is modelled at a time when its partner was being withdrawn and 10001 was left to soldier on as the last of a unique pair of prototypes, sustained using parts from its twin, 10000.

The HEA Hopper Wagons were introduced following the success of the HAA Coal Hoppers which were first used in the mid-1960s to deliver coal to power stations as part of the then-new Merry-Go-Round (MGR) trains. The first wagons were built in the mid-1970s as HBAs, but as construction progressed, the design was changed, and the code HEA was used for later batches. The HBAs were subsequently modified to match the HEAs and recoded, giving a total fleet of almost 2,000 HEAs.

The wagons replaced ageing wooden- and steel-bodied wagons, delivering household coal to local terminals and reaching all corners of the UK. The HEAs worked in both mixed freight and block train formations.

With the demand for household coal in decline, HEAs were used to transport other minerals, like rock salt, and many were rebuilt or recoded, for example some were used as Nuclear Barrier Wagons (RNAs) with their hoppers removed, or box wagons (MEAs) with new box bodies to carry a variety of bulk loads.

The British Railways Mk1 was the designation given to BR’s first standard design of main line coaching stock, and one of its most successful. Built from 1951 until the early 1960s to augment and replace the array of ‘Big Four’ and earlier ‘pre-grouping’ designs inherited from the LMS, LNER, GWR and SR, BR took the best features from several of these types to produce the new steel-bodied design. As a result, the Mk1 was stronger and safer than any of the inherited types that came before it.

Never before available in N scale, this Graham Farish model depicts the South Eastern and Chatham Railway’s (SE&CR) 25 Ton Goods Brake which became known as the ‘Dance Halls’ owing to the spacious cabin provided for the Guard. Designed and built by the SE&CR, the Southern Railway (SR) built further examples after Grouping before designing their own version – the 25 Ton ‘Pill Box’ Brake Van (models of which are also produced by Graham Farish) – which afforded a Guard much less covered accommodation. Whilst the final example was built during the 1920s, the Dance Halls were long lived with some surviving through to the late-twentieth century having been granted a second life in departmental use.

Designed as a replacement for the Tube Wagons – many of which BR had inherited at Nationalisation or built themselves during the early-BR period – the OBA Open Wagon was designed to transport general merchandise. Large side doors aided loading and various tethering points were integrated into the floors of these air-braked wagons. The Bachmann Branchline model is available with Low or High Ends – this particular example depicts a wagon with Low Ends – and features fine mouldings throughout, in particular the door stops, separately fitted brake equipment and handbrake levers, and metal buffer heads.

Rail has long played an important role in transporting fuel around the UK, the thirst for was growing strongly by the mid-twentieth century thanks to the advent of air travel, the private motor vehicle and the dieselisation of Britain’s railways. New, larger wagons were required to meet the demand for fuel transport and the TEA Bogie Tank Wagon provided the answer. The first examples were built during the 1960s with construction of similar types continuing for several decades. TEAs and their derivatives remain the core mode of transport for oil and fuel products today.

The Bachmann Branchline model captures the skeletal nature of the prototype, with the thin deck and solebars and adjoining ends all moulded crisply along with separate stanchions which plug into the stanchion pockets with a reassuringly positive fit. Other separately fitted details include the lamp brackets, brake equipment and handbrake levers, whilst metal buffer heads can be found at each end of the model.

The West Coast Railway Company WCRC operates a fleet of Mk1 coaches for tour train services including the Fort William to Mallaig Jacobite steam-hauled service.

Second class coaches formed the backbone of the passenger carriage fleet. The use of open plan seating allowed all passengers to be seated at a table, plus provided seats for more passengers with less weight when compared to traditional side-corridor coaches. Later passengers began to appreciate the better field of view from the open style coaches, especially on scenic lines.

The diminutive Baguley-Drewry marks Bachmann’s first foray into the world of narrow gauge diesels for the Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 scale range. These 70 horsepower machines were originally built for use at Royal Naval Armament Depots (RNAD) which employed narrow gauge networks to move armaments between storage locations and transhipment sites.

This model is brought to live by the livery application which uses authentic colours, logos and typefaces to portray a locomotive in heritage railway service, finished in the popular lined maroon livery which gives a much less utilitarian look then the more typical industry 'high visibility' colours. Several details are fitted separately, including the air filter mounted on top of the bonnet, headlights (non-functional) at the front and rear of the cab, windscreen wipers and, inside the cab, chairs and controls are modelled too.

The maker’s name is carried on the front of the locomotive whist the window frames are picked out in silver and the cab interior is decorated, but the icing on the cake for this model is the company’s camel motif which adorns each side of the cab!
