USS New York (BB-34) was laid down in 1911 at the Brooklyn shipyard and launched in 1912. In 1914 the ship was sent into Mexican waters to support the invasion of Vera Cruz. On the US entering WW1, New York was assigned to British waters and mainly responsible for escort missions. Post war New York returned to daily training, and participated in various fleet problem-solving exercises, being modernised in 1925/27.

While the US remained neutral in 1941 the New York was increasingly involved in protecting merchant shipping to Britain. On entering the war against both Japan and Germany the ship took part in the North African campaign for artillery support, subsequently staying in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean on convoy duties until  1945. Transferred to the Pacific Fleet, participating in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa and being hit by a kamikaze the New York participated in operation magic carpet, carrying troops home. July 1946 saw New York incorporated into the 'Operation crossroads' but did not sink, finally retiring from the navy in 1948 and sunk as a target ship.
